Is EMDR effective Online?

Many people wonder whether EMDR therapy delivered online can be as effective as meeting in person. The reassuring answer is yes.
Research has shown that online EMDR can achieve clinically meaningful improvements in symptoms of trauma, PTSD, anxiety and depression, with outcomes comparable to face-to-face therapy when delivered by a trained EMDR therapist. One large UK and Ireland service evaluation found that clients experienced significant reductions in symptoms regardless of whether therapy was delivered remotely, and the therapist’s level of EMDR experience did not affect treatment outcomes. (PubMed Central (PMC)).
The EMDR UK Association has summarised this research by stating that an evaluation of online EMDR found it “worked, and was as effective as seeing a therapist in person.” (EMDR UK Association).
The EMDR All-Ireland Association also reassures clients that “Online EMDR therapy IS EMDR Therapy” and explains that, for many people, online sessions “can be as effective as meeting face to face (sometimes more so).” (EMDR Ireland)
While EMDR Europe has been appropriately cautious about claiming complete equivalence because there are not yet enough large, head-to-head clinical trials, it notes that experienced EMDR practitioners across Europe consistently report online EMDR to be as effective as face-to-face therapy in clinical practice. The Benefits of EMDR Therapy Online
For many clients, online therapy also offers practical advantages. Being in the comfort of your own home can help you feel more relaxed, avoids travel after emotionally demanding sessions, and makes specialist trauma therapy accessible wherever you live. At EMDR Healing, online sessions are delivered using secure video technology and follow exactly the same evidence-based EMDR protocol as in-person treatment.
